Colorado Heat Pump Rebates in 2026 — What’s Actually Left

The federal credit expired in 2025. Here is every incentive a Front Range homeowner can still claim this year, what each one is worth, and which ones we file on your behalf.

Xcel up to $750/ton
HEAR up to $8,000
Panel up to $4,000

First, the thing most contractor websites still get wrong.

The federal 25C Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit — the one worth up to $2,000 on a heat pump — expired on December 31, 2025. It was ended by the One Big Beautiful Bill Act in July 2025 and it does not apply to any system installed in 2026. If a quote you are comparing subtracts a federal credit, that quote is overstating your savings.

The Short Version

Program rules govern how HEAR interacts with the state credit and utility rebates on the same measure. We work that out for your specific job before you sign.

Process

How We Handle the Paperwork

  1. We confirm your utility and your eligibility

Which utility serves you determines which rebates apply. Income-qualified programs need documentation, and we tell you exactly what to gather.

  2. Equipment is selected to qualify

ENERGY STAR certification, AHRI matching, and cold-climate designation all affect which rebates you can claim. We pick equipment that qualifies for the most money, not just equipment that works.

  3. Your proposal itemizes every dollar

Gross price, each incentive on its own line, and a net number. Nothing vague, nothing assumed.

  4. Discounts apply at the invoice

The Colorado credit and point-of-sale programs reduce what you pay us. You are not floating the money and waiting.

  5. We file the utility rebates

Xcel and municipal utility submissions are ours to handle, including the AHRI documentation and invoices they ask for.

FAQ

Rebate Questions

Is the federal heat pump tax credit really gone?
Yes. Section 25C ended for property placed in service after December 31, 2025. There is no phase-out and no grandfathering for 2026 installs. Anyone quoting it to you in 2026 is either working from stale marketing material or hoping you will not check.
Can I stack the Colorado credit with Xcel rebates?
Generally yes — they come from different sources and are designed to layer. The interaction that needs care is HEAR against the other programs on the same measure, since HEAR can cover a percentage of project cost. We work the specific combination out for your job rather than promising a headline number.
How do I know if I qualify for HEAR?
It is based on your household income relative to the area median income for your county and household size. Under 80% AMI gets the most generous tier; 80–150% gets a reduced tier. Tell us your county, household size, and rough income band and we can tell you which tier you land in before you commit to anything.
Do I need to do anything to get the Colorado credit?
No. It is claimed by the contractor and passed to you as a discount on the invoice. You do not file anything and you do not wait for a check. That is by design — the state built it that way to remove the friction that killed uptake on earlier programs.
What if the rebate does not come through after the install?
Point-of-sale discounts are already applied, so those are not at risk to you. For utility rebates we file on your behalf, we tell you up front which ones are confirmed versus expected, and we do not build an unconfirmed rebate into your net price without labeling it as such.
