Three Things Worth Checking First

Is it in defrost?
If the outdoor unit looks like it is steaming and the indoor air feels cool for a few minutes, that is a normal defrost cycle. Wait ten minutes and see whether it resumes heating.
Filters and clearance
A clogged filter is the single most common cause of “it stopped working.” Same for an outdoor unit buried in snow or leaves. Both are free to fix.
Thermostat mode
“Emergency heat” or “auxiliary heat only” left on will run expensive backup and mask the heat pump entirely. Worth confirming before assuming a fault.
Most modern systems display a fault code at the indoor unit or in the manufacturer’s app. Reading it to us over the phone often means we arrive with the right part rather than making two trips.
What an Annual Service Includes
Coil cleaning
Indoor and outdoor coils. Colorado’s fine dust clings to fins and costs you efficiency faster than in humid climates.
Filter service
Cleaned or replaced, and we tell you the correct interval for your household rather than a generic answer.
Refrigerant verification
Operating pressures checked against spec. A slow leak found early is far cheaper than the compressor failure it eventually causes.
Electrical inspection
Connections, capacitors, and contactors. Loose connections are a leading cause of compressor failure and they are cheap to catch.
Defrost and controls
Defrost cycle verified before heating season, and backup heat changeover confirmed to be set where it should be.
Condensate system
Drain and pan cleared. Blocked condensate is a common source of indoor water damage, and it is entirely preventable.
Airflow check
Supply and return temperature split measured to confirm the system is actually performing, not merely running.
Written report
Everything found, current condition, and what we would watch. No pressure, no invented urgency.
Most manufacturer warranties require documented proper maintenance. When a claim involves a failure that neglect contributed to, manufacturers can and do dispute it. Annual professional service with a paper trail is the cleanest protection you have.
When to Schedule
Best windows
- Spring (April–May) — after winter heating stress, before cooling season
- Fall (September–October) — verify defrost and backup heat before you need them
- After a hailstorm — always. Colorado hail damages outdoor coil fins and reduces airflow
Do not wait if
- Backup or emergency heat is running when it is mild outside
- Ice is building on the outdoor unit and not clearing
- The system is short-cycling — on and off repeatedly
- You hear grinding, screeching, or hard clicking
- Bills jumped sharply with no change in weather or usage
